School of Sanctuary

Parkland Primary is now an accredited SCHOOL OF SANCTUARY!

The Rights Respecting Learner Voice group have been working hard all year to make sure that everyone in our school has had the opportunity to learn about sanctuary seekers, implementing ideas to create a welcoming environment for all here at Parkland.

The School of Sanctuary panel visited the school’s Oak Cafe in May, hearing all about the work we have done towards achieving the award. The panel felt that the ‘concept of welcome, inclusion and acceptance is embedded across the school.’

To celebrate such a brilliant achievement, a Day of Welcome was organised for parents and the community to visit the school during Refugee Week. The day was a huge success, with artwork and songs on the theme of ‘home’ being shared and learners from Y Bont Fawr serving tea, coffee and treats they had prepared especially for the day. Our Money Makers also raised nearly £50 for Swansea Asylum Seekers Support, a local charity that support those seeking sanctuary in our community.

Later in the day we welcomed families into our classroom to take part in creative workshops. Thank you to all who made the day a special occasion and celebrated becoming a School of Sanctuary with us.
